(If you can’t be good, maybe try not to be quite so evil?)

As I was waiting in the elevator this morning, another employee stepped in. Let’s call him “Mr. Man Boobs.” They were even kind of pointy. I really wanted to laugh, but I bit my tongue. Maybe I smiled slightly, but I was biting pretty damn hard hard.

While I realize that’s not quite the same as being good, that’s doing pretty well for me.

Science, again

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 7:48 am

Well, there is an article in the NY Times today about a study tying longer lifespans to being mildly overweight.

As you might have guessed, it is receiving a lot of criticism and is very controversial. But this brings up one of the issues I have with science reporting and another issue that I sometimes have with the strong trust we have in science to provide the truth.

Science reporting issue: as a general reader scanning this article, I have no idea how the study was conducted or who funded it. These are really important questions. All I know is what the conclusion was.

“Trusting science” issue: if different studies are finding very different results, which study does the general reader trust? I think we often end up favoring whatever evidence supports our own lifestyles or the way we feel things should be. However, this totally wrecks science.

I do think it’s important to “test the waters” of what we believe to be true, but sometimes it seems that some researchers are out to either debunk established knowledge or to prove their own ideas, regardless of the slanting of evidence it takes to do this. Even if the intent is not so blatent, bias can creep into an experiment fairly innocuously sometimes.

It’s totally about the Buddhism

Or at least letting go of emotion and attachments– which is not an easy thing to do since emotions are like drugs. And it’s not the same as saying “don’t feel” because it acknowledges that people have feelings, but it’s just a way of dealing with the overwhelming bits that may cause people to make bad decisions. Such as, um, say embracing the power of the Dark Side of the Force. COME ON, THAT WAS NOT A SPOILER!!!

The Goddess and I finally saw Episode 3 last night and enjoyed it bunches (unfortunately, we both had to sprint out before the credits finished because we had way too much Blue Icee). I am totally up for seeing it again while it is in theaters. The trailers before the movie were the best I have seen in a while, also. Maybe it is just that time of year.

Apparently there are at least two or three movies playing at Market Square that I want to see right now, so Memorial Day weekend might be a good time to watch a bunch of movies. And pack some things. And work a little more overtime. And sleep bunches.

I kind of feel like I have a baby alien growing in my chest today and preparing to explode into the world. But maybe it’s just love.

I have had the song “Come On Eileen” stuck in my head ever since I heard the Save Ferris remix on Sunday. It’s kind of cheerful and annoying at the same time since I keep hearing a boisterous “tooralooralay” in my head now and then.

Perfect weather, perfect day

Apparently it really is the (unofficial) start of summer. Ren Faire season has begun. We took a trip to Cambridge for a few hours today to attend the 3rd annual Cambridge Renaissance Faire. It only lasts for one weekend and is nowhere near the size of the Bristol Ren Faire, but it is neat and I am glad Mlitiagrl reminded us about it this year. So far, I can say that I have been to it every year it has existed.

We met up with Artie and MrGuff there, had brunch with them, and checked out the goings-on. While hanging out there, we decided to start a new game! So the rest of the afternoon/evening was spent creating new characters and situating ourselves in the background material. The game sessions will have to be bi-weekly or thereabouts because there will be some commuting involved, but it is going to be EXCELLENT because I have never played an ongoing campaign in person with Artie and MrGuff before. They have had trouble forming a gaming group in their community, so it works out well for everyone involved! And this means that we will get to see them on a more regular basis!

I am very happy about all of this! Very excited!

MrGuff will be running the game– all of the characters are spellcasters at a magic school (less like Hogwarts, more like D&D 3.5). My chap, Henry, is a smart, friendly jock (rugby player, but he likes to fight with a cricket bat). His magic specialty is conjuration spells (summoning, teleporting, etc.). Oh, and his grandfather was a Storm Giant, so he has the Storm Giant bloodline and he looks really big and muscley for his age.

Wow, I feel like I have done so many different things this weekend! It feels awesome! I should go get some sleep. I have a lot of stuff going on this week, too.

That’s the button my right hand third finger or pinky is going to slip and hit when I mean to press delete. Ah, the sweet, sweet aches and pains of getting used to a new keyboard.

I finally installed FireFox on Signy this morning, so that adds an extra degree of comfort.

::contented sigh::

OK, so now that I have done that, I should hop off to find people and go to Cambridge.

Woo! Friday!

It has been a really busy week on this end.

I have been working extra hours and trying to spend as much time as possible with my friends and the chelovyek. More of that coming up this weekend. The plan right now is to sign my new lease with new roommate/goddess on Saturday morning (yippee!!! ::dance::). I will probably go to work for a while after that, then hang out with people if I am not tripping over myself with exhaustion.

We are trying to finish our Eberron stuff on Mondays right now and will be starting a new game that Mlitiagrl will be running after that. We just started a new Thursday campaign (D&D 3.5) with the intention of playing it until we’re Epic (we really have that intention with most of our games, but Inle is running and his games tend to have longevity, maybe in part because he is a very skilled and flexible GM). I made a goblin Spirit Shaman for the Thursday game (see Complete Divine for class details), so that is exciting. I am trying to play her a little differently from Ginger (the mischievous gnome druid I played last summer in Theta’s campaign), but I had a lot of fun playing Ginger, so I hope I have as much fun with this character– especially if we play this campaign past 20th. We just had our first session last night (missing one party member, so we didn’t attempt to do too much). I hadn’t gamed in about a month, so it was satisfying to get back to it.

My new computer arrived on Wednesday, so I have been setting her up and spending some time checking out her features. I took some pics and will try to get them on my computer sometime soon. It might be time to set up a Shutterfly account or something.

The summer season is kind of kicking off, I guess, even though it won’t technically be summer for about another month. So there will be a lot of busy-ness (and fun) the next few months. Yay! I am looking forward to doing things!

Yes, so I was sleeping last night while the real geeks were munching cop-porn and squealing excitedly at the midnight showing of SW3.

No fear. I think I know where this story is going …
