Mishaps and other haps

I love you, Mac applications!

Neat! I just used iPhoto to upload all of the pics on my camera from the past two months. From what I have seen so far, I am convinced that this program rocks!

It was kind of hilarious when I started the slide show and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” began playing (by default) to accompany the pics I took of Signy when I first unboxed her. I discovered that I could set the music to play anything in my iTunes library, so I changed the settings.

The slide show function does a zoomy thing that is neat. I have had my digital camera for maybe 3-4 years now and there are cooler ones on the market (with better megapixelage– mine is only 2.0), but I was reminded that the resolution and photo quality is still pretty damn good!

New place– Saturday update

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 5:49 pm

Today:

– first cup of coffee
– first shower
– some cleaning bits
– first couple of laundry bits
– some unpacking
– first cup of tea
– returned keys to old place

Things are going well.

Mlitiagrl keeps trying to visit when I am not home, but I expect that she will be able to find me more often than not once I am settled. I have been running around a lot this weekend, wrapping up odds and ends at the old apartment and shopping for things I need at the new one.

While shopping, I discovered soda made from tea, so I bought several cans to investigate. I also purchased some non-soda tea which is ridiculous because my roommate has an entire shelf devoted to tea (much like me at my old place). I have been instructed to drink said tea, so I probably will at some point. There is certainly a lot to choose from. And I have a whole box of teapots yet to be unpacked.

We also like the same kind of hummus (or at the moment we prefer the same kind of hummus). So there are several containers of the same kind of hummus in the refrigerator. And there’s a lot of milk at the moment. And napkins and hand soap.

Moved!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 3:22 pm

I still have a few odds and ends to pick up from the old place and I need to clean a bit there and take the keys back, but otherwise, I am moved!

Yesterday I moved all of my non-furniture stuff. It took 4 car trips, but I was really trying to get as much as possible done yesterday and I did.

Today was furniture-moving day and I sort of dreaded it, especially since my shoulder has been giving me hell this week. However, I have a really strong boyfriend who was off and helped me today. He totally shouldered the bulk of the weight, lifting sofa on his back and whatnot.

We moved things, returned truck, and went to lunch at Maharaja (sp?). Then we stopped by CompUSA to browse things (like World of Warcraft, which we might be playing together soon).

Now time to *arrange* things and put the bed back together!

Oh, and new network r0x0rz!

Let’s talk about education for a bit

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 4:28 pm

I *almost* wrote a post belittling certain institutions of higher education.

I thought better of it since it would not be very constructive. I am a little sore about standards for degrees right now, after just reading a piece of *crap* that is going to be submitted as a Master’s thesis (at least the quality of the writer and the quality of the school match– hey, hey!).

Oops, that qualified as belittling, didn’t it? It is a small, local sludgepot, but its name is not important. I do not personally know anyone who has attended or received a degree from this place.

I have other complaints in regards to the matter above (wherein I am involved in editing a Master’s thesis), but I will not discuss those here.

What I will do is ask what people think should be changed about their institution of higher learning (past or present), post-secondary education in general, and/or the particular state of higher education in the United States (if there is one– it seems highly variable to me)?

P.S. I will be leaving you with those thoughts for a bit (and I know you have some!). I need to go move my stuff :-)

New Discovery

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 1:01 pm

For those who do not know this about me, I really like Mexican food. Sometimes cheese things, but more often I like really gooey bean and rice concoctions– the kind of food you really have to cultivate Helpful Bacteria for in order *not* to be noxious to your friends and family.

I am the Queen of Helpful Bacteria.

But anyway, a recent problem I have been having is not only how can I make lunch more interesting, but also what can I eat for dinner on nights that I leave work and go straight to gaming (i.e. something cheap, nutritious, and preferably warm)?

As I might have mentioned, I am in the process of moving, so I picked up a couple of burritos made by Amy’s Kitchen to make sure that I don’t starve this week since most cooking utensils and my pots and pans are packed.

They are organic and terrific– whole grain and everything! Much better for me than other burrito alternatives and/or junk food! Also, as good as ones I make when I am doing things myself. They can be transported to work and gaming (of course, gaming is going to be a lot closer to home soon)!

So I have a feeling that these are going to be my new “tasty-like-junk-food-but-not-really-junk” of choice.

After some work this weekend, I am pretty much packed and ready to go. Moving will happen on Wednesday and Thursday and I expect to be settled in (or getting there) by the weekend. As a heads-up, my router has moved to the new place ahead of me, so no internet access for me at home right now.

(Unless someone sets up another unsecured wireless network in my building … but I don’t think I’ll really have time to bother checking over the next few days)

I’ve got Elvis in my freezer!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 6:48 pm

Well, not really. I ate him.

Of course, I am talking about Fat Elvis ice cream, which I recently discovered on a trip with Singularity to the Chocolate Shoppe (which is an ice cream shop, not a chocolate shop).

I made a stop by Ella’s Deli (Official Home of the Carousel Menagerie– a tiny, tasty combination of House on the Rock and Circus World) this afternoon and Fat Elvis also lives there!

For the uninitiated, Fat Elvis is banana ice cream with small chocolate chunks and globby peanut butter bits (My sister, Jupitersnest, was *almost* right in guessing that it was a combination of banana, PB, and bacon).

Occasionally I become a little obsessed with a flavor of ice cream and Fat Elvis is my current obsession. However, it will not keep me from dallying with Monkey Bites if I should happen to find myself at Cold Stone.

I have a thing for bananas, BTW. It may be a subconscious metaphor, but it’s also just a literal truth. There is nothing else in the world quite like a banana.

Hello, Technology!

I was part of a 5-person conference call this evening. It was like having magical cell phones!

Preparation

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 3:03 pm

It’s about that time.

I will be taking off part of next week and hauling my stuff over to the apartment building that is occupied by a growing cluster of friends. I guess I am the growing part of the cluster for the moment.

I packed a few more boxes last night and cleaned out more extraneous bits. It is surprising how old, faded pajamas just kind of settle into a drawer and stay there, even if you don’t wear them anymore.

I hauled two large bags out this morning– one for the trash and one for donation. It felt good to do that– remove the stuff– I really like cleaning out and organizing things. Maybe I just like to have a clean, clear living area– but I think deep down I feel like I am actively shaping my life via my habitat.

It’s silly. The state of my apartment has no bearing on the rest of my life. But it’s only a little insane to think that it does– only a *little.* If that is all, then life is pretty good.

Being all Ambitious and Stuff …

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 1:01 pm

Well, I applied for three jobs yesterday and will probably be applying for another one later this week or this weekend, so we shall see what happens …
