Vacation update numero tres

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 2:31 pm

As vacation winds down, I have been relaxing and taking care of a few things while I have time off to think about them.

I am meeting with a trainer tomorrow afternoon to discuss my fitness plan. I’m not sure how much of my weekday evening time this will consume, but it’s important to me and I haven’t been doing a lot about it lately.

Vacation update numero dos

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 11:34 am

Wow. Yes, the party on Saturday was fantastic. It lasted about 15 hours, I think. People came and went as they could, but I think we had up to 25 people in the apartment at the busiest times. Several board/card games were played. I think Arkham Horror (Stitch brought his copy) was probably the most popular and the longest-played game, but there were also games of Munchkin, Settlers of Catan, Illuminati, The Great Dalmuti, and Bang!

Nori was at our place around noon to start cooking and it was probably 5 AM or so before he left. I was impressed with what he did at Stitch’s graduation party, but I was again totally amazed with his cooking skills and sheer endurance– he was busy cooking, cleaning, generally doing things for people for 17 hours!!! Fresh sushi, california rolls, teriyaki burgers, teriyaki tofu (just for me), tempura, rice and a Japanese stew similar to something that I forget the name of– there were MANY, MANY ROUNDS of these things prepared as more and more people arrived.

Tons of alcohol were consumed and we still have tons of alcohol in the apartment. I have been suggesting that we need to have another party just to properly consume the alcohol.

Mlitiagrl and I hightailed it back to her place for a couple of hours in the late evening to take a breather from the crowd and we discussed grad school and botany-related things for a bit.

This is when we missed the suicide sushi (which I don’t think was vegetarian, so I don’t feel too much regret). Inle said that he and Stitch ate quite a bit of it– apparently it was very spicy because Inle’s tastebuds were still recovering on Sunday.

So sometime around 5 AM people generally went home. PhysOrg crashed with me and it was probably around 10 or 10:30 before we were fully conscious again. He left to go help a friend around 11 and I played WoW for a bit on Sunday afternoon.

Mlitiagrl and Inle invited me to go to lunch with them and see The Brothers Grimm, which was fantastic. We hit the bookstore before heading home. I expected people might be occupied with Guild Wars in the evening, but at some point everyone switched over to WoW.

I was not feeling very well last night, however, and went to bed pretty early for a vacation night. I’ve had a couple of nights like that recently. Back to normal this morning.

Vacation update numero uno

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 10:13 am

This morning we are hanging out and cleaning up at home in prep for my roommate’s birthday party later today.

There is a WHOLE LOT of alcohol in our apartment, so if that is any indication of the fun yet to come, I just hope we’re prepared to handle it.

I haven’t started drinking yet (really), but I just want to blather for a sec about the BEST TOILET BOWL CLEANER IN THE WORLD. I discovered it with our other cleaning products this morning. I am certain that I didn’t buy it and my roommate claims equal prior ignorance of its existence, so maybe the cleaning fairies felt pity for us and stashed it in amongst our cleaning supplies.

The name of the godsend is Sno-Bol, which seems to promise more than its purposefully-misspelled name could possibly deliver. However, this stuff is beyond clean– it eats away at those disgusting, gummy mineral deposits that generally make visitors flee the bathroom in fear. Anyway, I recommend it.

But vacation!

I have done quite a bit of shopping (mostly on Wednesday and Thursday), but very little *buying*, which is both good because it saves money and disappointing because it means I have not found exactly what I want.

On Thursday I went downtown for lunch, meandered for a bit downtown because I don’t have a lot of reason to hang out there normally, and dropped by Borders for a bit to browse periodicals. The chelovyek called and met me there and we browsed for a bit more before going for ice cream.

Thursday evening I drove out to Spring Green with my roommate and we saw Macbeth at American Players Theatre. The performance was very well done. A couple of roles were substituted, but I wouldn’t have thought about it if they had not made an announcement before the play began. No substitution in terms of quality, though.

I was happy with the supernatural special effects, in particular, for this play. It’s always interesting to see what APT will do with a stage area that has to be changed daily for performances of different plays (sometimes 2 plays in a day). Also, I really recommend outdoor performances in the summer, especially if it’s Shakespeare.

Friday morning I was up bright and early for brunch with the chelovyek and his mom and a family friend. There was some shopping, which somehow ended up involving a lot of poking and general misbehavior. But I really needed to nap in the afternoon, so I did.

Later we went out to dinner (the intention on my part was sort of to celebrate our two-year thing)– we had to wait a long time for a table, so it turned into a tedious sort of undertaking. At one point, we had no less than *two* beepers because we thought we would try to get a pool table while waiting. We totally failed to get a pool table.

Thinking about it this morning, I really think I enjoyed our post-Valentine’s thing a lot more, so I think I will keep that in mind the next time I decide to plan something. Note to self: pick an off-day (not Friday night) and go somewhere less crowded (unless people we know are there).

So yes, I should go check on laundry now.

Vacation plans

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 11:02 am

1) As you might have guessed, a lot of WoW. Montanni hit 20th yesterday without much commitment of play time, but I have two new characters that I haven’t played yet– a troll hunter and an undead rogue.

2) I have a couple of books that I am in the process of reading:

a) Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (a novel)

b) The Ancestor’s Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution by Richard Dawkins (prof. at Oxford University, better-known for his earlier books, The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker).

3) Going to APT tonight with my roommate to see Macbeth.

4) Party on Saturday at my place (roommate’s birthday)

5) Spending time with boyfriend since our two-year dating anniversary thing is at hand– rather, it is actually Labor Day weekend, but there are always things going on over Labor Day weekend.

That is about as far as I have planned, so next week is wide open.

Warrior sandwich

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 1:00 pm

For those who might be concerned about the protein intake of the average vegetarian, I offer this up as an example of how protein should really be a non-issue– even if you are reducing the amount of dairy you eat.

It is the warrior sandwich. Before anyone asks, no real warriors are used in the making of this sandwich, although if you want to create a meaty version of this sandwich, that might be one way to do it.

The sandwich has a lot of protein and therefore, I think a warrior such as Montanni would approve. Hence, the name.

Ingredients:

2 black bean burgers (ala Morningstar Farms) = 22 g protein
2 slices of whole wheat bread = 8 g protein
Hummus = 1-2 g protein
Wasabi mustard = 0 g protein, but tasty

This is a sandwich with over 30 g of protein. It will also make you very full, so you won’t have to stop in the middle of battle for a snack.

Lions and hyenas and giraffes, oh my!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 10:04 am

Montanni, now level 16, was fighting some of these near Orgrimmar last night and a poor little 10th level character kept respawning in the area and trying to take on level 16 hyenas. His ass got kicked in about 2 seconds, which must have been incredibly annoying. However, he kept healing me, which was useful. I need a healbot cohort.

A nice sort of Sunday

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 8:19 pm

Hey, I didn’t stay in my room playing WOW all weekend! PhysOrg and I spent some time today helping a friend of his family unpack some things. PhysOrg’s mom came over for a bit to help with some arranging/decorating details. They hung a beautiful, framed Chinese embroidery from the 1850s while we were there. That is just a marvelous piece– lots of blue and gold bits. It had been wrapped up for several years, so I had not seen it before.

We left and went to lunch around 4 and then headed back to PhysOrg’s place, where people were camped out playing Guild Wars. However, we were kind of sleepy, so we napped for a bit.

After a short period of nappiness, PhysOrg decided to join his housemates + Inle & online friends and I decided to track down a book I wanted from the bookstore. A waffle cone of vanilla custard also had my name written on it, apparently.

Now I am not sure whether I want to play WOW for a couple of hours or read a little or just fall over and sleep more. I am very sleepy tonight for some reason. Oh, I haven’t had much caffeine at all today. Maybe that’s why.

Ginger

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 12:03 am

Mostly for Mlitiagrl, who probably won’t read this until she is back from her Texas trip. I just wanted to note what I found at Cost Plus World Market today since it may be of interest:

Ginger Beer (Australian brand called Bundaberg)– non-alcoholic, very gingery soda

Ginger bears (like gummy bears, but they’re ginger flavored)

There is a section right now that seems to mostly be Australian stuff (Vegemite, Anzac biscuits, etc.) and that is where I discovered this ginger stuff.
