Another busy week

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 10:53 am

No word yet on the Housewarming Party. That will probably be at least a few weeks away. The next several weekends are spoken for (or some of us won’t be around, anyway), so it’s looking like it will probably be sometime into September before we can throw a proper party.

Maybe the weekend of the 9th? Does anyone have plans already set for the 9th? Or the 16th? As far as I know, September is unbooked, except for maybe the first weekend and the last weekend.

Also, I think Stitch wanted to have a birthday/graduation party at some point … hmmm … well, we may just have to try to figure out a time for all of this. Mid-September is sounding better and better …

In the meantime, evenings this week are looking pretty busy so far, except for Friday. PhysOrg and I have dinner and shopping to do tonight (i.e. a date– although the shopping has both a fun side and a productive side).

Tuesday and Thursday are our weekly tabletop games. I think I will make a tasty lasagna on Tuesday night, since I threatened to do that yesterday, but none of us were really hungry at the right time for dinner.

Wednesday we’re planning to have some guests over for dinner.

Saturday– wedding and post-wedding events! It might be good to crash and play some WoW after that.

Sunday we are planning to possibly have some more guests for dinner.

Time to see what our gas oven can do! :-)

Small weekend things

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 8:00 pm

Things have been done this weekend:

1) Not one, but two dresses have been purchased in anticipation of The Wedding next weekend. The only question is should I wear the cute dress or the sophisticated dress? I did NOT buy the red dress with the white polka dots, although the “cute” dress has both polka dots and crinoline. In my heart of hearts, I know I cannot wear both dresses to the wedding, but my rationale for buying two is that I rarely go shopping for girly clothes and surely there might be more occasions to wear dresses …

2) I played some WoW! We did not kill Drakk this week (::sigh::).

3) The kitchen is mostly organized now! There are still a few boxes of kitchen stuff that need to be unpacked, but things are finding places and we still have a good bit of shelf/storage space left. I love the china cabinet. My teapots are displayed!

4) PhysOrg moved my bookshelf up to my room this evening so I will work on some bedroom organization before I go to bed tonight. If I unpack those boxes of books, I might be able to get my shoes into the closet …

5) I talked to my dad for about half an hour today. Always good to keep up with family!

6) I have been shopping and now there are significant amounts of food in the house, which means I shouldn’t have to eat out as much next week as I did this past week.

7) Onlyunjeu stayed over most of the weekend and ran UBRS and Molten Core from our computer room. I guess our house is a *little* like preparation for the dorms.
8) Speaking of our computer room … remember those hundreds of BAWLS bottles we saved a few years back? PhysOrg always intended that if we had a computer room, they would become part of the decor. Hey, we’re classy AND we recycle.

SOOOO CLEAN!

Microcosm

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 11:14 am

It has been a busy week, although kind of a feeling-isolated week, too. At moments, it has been kind of lonely.

Everyone has been in their own world (to some extent) since the move: on different sleeping and eating schedules, dealing with the details of moving the last of their stuff, as well as various other personal issues and things to work out with vehicles and such. Busy with bits.

I finished hauling the final bits of my property over to the house last night. I am completely moved.

Some time will be spent organizing things and unpacking (kitchen especially) this weekend. Also, clothes will be washed. A picture will be posted of the geeky new washer once it is delivered and installed.

Last night I finally got around to thinking about my phone and what I want to do since the contract is up. I did not realize that the decision would be so complicated until some issues with Bluetooth (specifically, Verizon being dinks) were mentioned this morning. After some deliberation and shopping I decided to get the (free) phone I liked anyway and renew the contract. I think I can work around the limitations since I haven’t even been using Bluetooth with my current phone. It will irritate me a little, but far less than purchasing a phone I don’t like as much and having to use it every day just so Bluetooth syncs properly when I occasionally use it.

Also, a new Cold Stone lives near us. This will be disastrous for my arteries.

First Post from New House!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 10:23 pm

Look! It’s the first post from the computer room of our new house.

I will have to take and post a photo of the computer room once we get everything set up.

Two Three good house-related things happened today:

1) We figured out how to make the central air work. It was turned off on the outside of the house, which we did not realize yesterday. There was needless suffering, but it is over now.

2) We purchased a really nifty top-of-the-line, high-efficiency, front-loading washer, to be delivered on Thursday.

3) Cable and Interwebs are functional.

Meanwhile, boxes and furniture are still everywhere, mostly being ignored by us since we are still recovering from the move (some more than others– for example, PhysOrg did a heroic share of the heavy lifting and many of my muscles were spared shameful agony and defeat). We had a good bit of help from people! Thanks, people!

Gaming will resume as usual on Tuesday and Thursday this week. I need to make a trip or two to my old apartment over the next day or two to pick up the small remainder of things that did not make it over to the house this weekend.

Moving

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 1:20 pm

It occurs to me that regardless of the amount of junk you own, apartments are a total bitch to move into and out of compared to a house. With a house, you just open the door and take your stuff in/out. In an apartment, you have to deal with the building’s outside doors and full flights of stairs and neighbors coming and going … and you have to actually walk a few yards to get to your car.

Houses have *driveways* for cars, not parking lots, and you can just pretty much fall from the front door into the seat of your car and drive away. Nice.

I met one of our neighbors while I was moving earlier. Their house is up for sale, so they probably won’t be our neighbors for long, but he seemed like your decent suburban sort. He was doing lawn work, which seems to be the trend in suburbia. We need to pick up a handy-dandy lawnmower pretty soon, once we have our other appliances installed and working.

Our internet service should be transferred out to the house pretty soon. I can post from work if nothing else, but I have no idea how busy this coming week will be. In the meantime, take care and stay cool.

How To Quit

I was broken when you got me
With holes that would let the light through
Red smoke and sequins an invisible floor
Faith is running toward the sound of water
Blind dancing in the footlights
Torn curtain talent, sparks from a lucky guess
Camera can’t find me I’m officially astray
When no one’s listening I have so much to say

I thought I knew how to quit
Drunk on memory we start up
Stockings on the rooftop, exotic innocence
Living on air, desire and reverie,
gravity pulls our lives down
Holding on to change, I want to walk the deep
Can’t get free from freedom
when I refuse to choose
Walls go with me as I leave my fate to lose

“Child Molesters Would Face Death Under New Bill”

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 9:43 am

OK, this is a PRIME example of media sensationalism.

If you read the article, you will discover that if this bill is approved, child molesters who *kill* their victims “could” receive the death penalty. Just like anyone who kills someone “could” receive the death penalty … depending on the nature of the murder …

I think it’s true that crimes against children are being sensationalized nationwide. The media is preying on anxious parents’ worst nightmares, that their children will be sexually exploited, abused, and murdered.

Almost every day there is a headline about “how to protect your children” in the local online news. I understand the concern and I approve of harsh penalties for those who exploit children, but it’s ridiculous to fuel public fear beyond a certain point.

The media is profiting on YOUR FEARS. Just remember that.

Once we’re all hooked to the Matrix grid, I’d like to add these bits of random wisdom to our database of shared information:

1) Bringing onion dip to work to sit out all day at the office party– bad idea. While onion dip may be tasty on chips, it has a pervasive odor and a high stink factor.

2) Placing a big crockpot of smelly BBQ wieners (or some such) by the vegetarian (again to sit out all day)– just plain rude.

3) Stocking up on low fat snack products while on a diet– counterproductive. Believe me, we tested this idea for *years* when I was growing up and no one *ever* lost and kept off the weight they wanted to lose. We just ate our beggars’ share of low-fat cookies and frozen yogurt and peered mournfully at the scales every day. (After a few weeks, it was back to McDonald’s.) That hungry feeling you have? One of the trademarks of dieting, pretty normal if you’re going to follow a dieting plan for weight loss.

4) If you are enlarging an executive suite during work hours, the company officer who will be using the office should be required to stand there and take in the noise that is disrupting other employees’ ability to work.
