Don’t do this in traffic

Seen at a four-way intersection at lunch:

A line of cars, some of which were waiting to turn right and some of which were waiting to drive forward. Suddenly, someone at the end of the line becomes impatient and decides to go around the entire line ahead of him and turn right, cutting off the person at the head of the line.

The American Dream

Universal Healthcare, right?

Hmmm … I heard a co-worker state yesterday that national healthcare is not the way to go because “look at Canada– their system is almost bankrupt” and “would you really want the government determining which services are paid for?”

Right … because right now your health insurance company chooses which services are covered. And your insurance company is out to make money … off of the premiums you and your employer pay … what, you didn’t know that insurance companies like to make money?!

I have no idea whether Canada’s system is an economic and bureaucratic nightmare or not, but I have read that overall life expectancy and health care in the United States is not as good as other “first-world” nations, despite the fact that we spend more per capita on healthcare than our European, socialized-medicine counterparts.

Endings, Beginnings

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 10:24 am

The last weekend of August signals to me that summer is just about over.

My friend onlyunjeu just moved to Maine and is starting his first semester of college. gruntac is almost finished with his M.B.A. degree and will be heading back to the United States when his dissertation is finished.

Mlitiagrl begins her second year of grad school pretty soon.

PhysOrg just had his last day at a job he has been at for several years on Friday and will be starting a new, very different job on Monday.

“Like sands through an hourglass” … but with less drama. Gah, I never watched soaps. Except out of boredom when I was two or three and the babysitter turned on General Hospital before cartoons came on (also the year and circumstance under which I became addicted to instant potato flakes, which my mom would not buy since she believed in using REAL POTATOES– imagine that).

Friday night there were drinks, Snakes on a Plane, and more drinks with some of PhysOrg’s friends from work to bid his old job farewell. I had met a few of his friends from work, but not these particular people. They seemed like a fun bunch. We discovered that one co-worker and his wife live just around the corner from us, so maybe we will have opportunities to hang out with them in the future.

Snakes on a Plane … hmmm … I’d have to say don’t run out and see it if you believe all the hype about the movie. However, if you are expecting a bad movie that tries to be classically bad/campy and fails miserably even at that, do run out and see it … or just wait for the DVD. Opening night was probably its best shot. This is no Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Saturday was the Goddess’ birthday. Nori was cooking again this year, so the food was superb. Games were fun. Cakes (brought by the Goddess’ sister and me) were tasty. A good time was had and a few more names/faces were retained.

This morning Orange Danishes have been baked and are waiting for icing. I am planning to stay around the house for most of the day and play catch-up on laundry, possibly do some cleaning, read, and probably play some WoW.

The Cult of N00bery

I would show this to my friends, but they would give me a look and maybe punch me. They’ve probably seen it anyway. So I’ll just blog it.

Me and King Lear

You know it’s going to be an interesting day when your boyfriend warns you, “Don’t punch God in the balls today” because within an hour of waking up, you’re already threatening to do just that.

It’s good to have someone around who defuses you when you’re angry, though. Chocolate chip cookie for breakfast also helps.

Storm coming in from the West

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 11:35 pm

It has been thundering for a while, but the tornado siren went off just as I was heading to bed at 11.

We’re under a tornado warning until midnight and a thunderstorm warning until 3 or 4 AM. There have been five reports of possible tornadoes in the radar area (mostly a cluster to the west that is heading our way).

I’ll probably head to bed when the warning expires, but these things make me a little anxious, so I am staying approximately eight feet from the basement door for a bit.

Lucky that we spend so much time in the computer room, right next to the basement, I guess. I only heard the siren at all because I went upstairs!

Molten Chocolate

It is very bad to keep forgetting that things are hot when they come off of the stove or, alternately, out of the microwave.

The roof of my mouth is going to be continuously sore, swollen, and raw this winter, as I have discovered the secrets of tasty molten chocolate.

A History Lesson

I thought this article was very indicative of the way history is written and re-written by newer generations of historians–”visions and revisions” as it were.

If the theory is that people try to embrace their government and its/their culture, no matter what it is, how does that play out in 2006 in the United States?

Do we actually worship and imbibe the same things that we mock, fear, and despise?

Hmmm …

While I am posting minutiae …

I made AWESOME falafels last night. I’m not sure if they were tastier than usual because of the added crushed garlic or whether it was the better-quality olive oil they were cooked in … but damn! I planned to eat one or three and I ate maybe … 7 or 8?!

I was so pleased with them that I tried to post a photo, but it was blurry and this isn’t really a food journal (although I know that has been a point of contention among some parties).

I’ll get back to work now.
