Weekend before the Weekend before Christmas

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 12:23 pm

Both of the last two weekends have really felt like the weekend before Christmas. A tree has been acquired. Inle has been making his family’s traditional baked apples. Other people (not me yet) have been baking cookies.

This weekend, more of the pre-Christmas ensued. PhysOrg and I got up late and went to breakfast Saturday morning. Then I dropped him off at home and went shopping. The crowds weren’t really too bad (parking at the mall was the biggest hassle, but still it’s the mall so it’s not really great any time). I spent four or five hours out and hit somewhere in the neighborhood of ten shops, I think. Not really a lot of present-buying for specific individuals, either. Most of the purchases were bakery items or baking ingredients or utensils.

I have been doing more and more of that sort of thing recently– just doing some general baking and such around the holidays rather than buying a bunch of presents. Unless someone has really been wanting or needing something, it’s hard to make a good guess about what to buy them and in previous years I had just resorted to gift cards. There may be some of that before it’s all over, but so far I have not been compelled to go that route in holiday season giving.

After shopping, I came home (to the smell of baking cookies), put things away, and watched a couple of movies back-to-back. Amazingly, the day was already over by the time I finished the second one.

This morning, cookie dough has been made. There are three bags of gingerbread cookie dough chilling in the fridge, waiting to be baked later tonight or this week.

One last full week of work this year, then a couple of short weeks. Yay!

Here’s Where She Meets Prince Charming

Michael was getting ready for a 36-hour work trip this morning, singing the opening song to Beauty and the Beast, my favorite Disney movie and probably one of my favorite movies period.

It’s one that lends itself well to grinding Timbermaw rep and completing quests in Winterspring, also:

Winterfall is a quiet village
Every day like the one before
Winterfall, full of little furbolgs
Waking up to say
Bonjour

Lunch Sunshine on a Foggy Day

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 11:57 am

It has been a very foggy morning and so far there haven’t been signs that it’s burning off. It’s a thick wall out there.

My plan for lunch this week was to avoid carrying in an extra bag and pick up food out, alternating between the Butternut Squash soup I have become addicted to at Panera and veggie sandwiches from Subway or the work cafeteria.

This attempt to spend money is being ruined today by tasty leftovers from last night. I had stir-fry seitan over rice with crowder peas on the side. The stir-fry sauce was homemade. How could I resist bringing that for lunch?

Tannenbaum

PhysOrg went Christmas tree shopping today and brought home one for the house. Photos are in my photo album.

Christmas cards have been written and will be mailed out Monday :-)

I did some cleaning today (floors, dusting, laundry). Yesterday was not particularly productive at all, but I did have a good time hanging out with my friends for lunch (way too much food was ordered, as evidenced by the styrofoam boxes in the fridge) and playing WoW.

I think I am going to elect *not* to plan anything for next weekend. I am leaning toward shopping, baking some Christmas cookies, and watching movies (probably in that order).

In other news, the dryer has started emitting a squeaking noise at all times when it is running, so I have started pricing dryers … we may need to replace it before too long.

Creeping deeper into December

This morning, the commuting world smelled like intense cold and fuel. I associate that smell (plus the stale, recycled odor of airports and pressurized cabin air) with flying to visit family during the holidays.

This year I will not be flying anywhere, but I am trying to put together some plans for this month.

Our household will be having lunch out together this Saturday.

I am considering movies or *something* for the 16th or thereabouts– a pre-birthday thing like I had last year since it’s a weekend and it’s not the weekend before Christmas.

Dinner on my birthday, the 27th, inconveniently stuck on a Wednesday (but it does give me an excuse to only work two days that week).

??? the weekend of the 23rd/24th– I’m not sure who will be around & when?

New Years plans the following weekend– let’s be brave and call it a Party.

More forthcoming as I figure things out.

It’s a ROBE … ok, it’s a dress

Thanks to Gruntac for showing me the video and putting the song in my head. Straight out of MMORPG culture:

I’ve been kicking ass since the dawn of time
I’m just a killing man that’s reached my killing prime
I burn and I plunder as it suits my desire
The weapon of my choice is “great balls of fire”

Chorus:
So why, I ask, it just doesn’t make much sense
That a man of my stature should have to wear a dress
I mean what, may I inquire, were you thinking on that day
When you conjured up for a man like me a robe that looks so gay

Ahhhh sit right back and your troubles melt away
Ahhhh he uses fire but his robe looks so gay

I was taught my craft at the dawn of pain
You may not like my methods but you’ll surely know my name
I just think incendiary thoughts and my hands burst into flames
A few moments later and you’ll never be the same

(Chorus)

So if you’re embarrassed and you hang your head in shame
You’d like an opportunity to redeem your worthy name
Well just remember this: when next you look to kill
That a man who’s truly skilled can look quite good in twill

(Chorus)

Actually, Montanni wears plate … and he doesn’t cast spells … but he does have a little black dress in his bank vault.

Cold Outside, Blizzard Inside

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael @ 8:11 am

Over the past week, the cold weather has really kicked in. Forecasted highs are expected to be in the 20s for the next three days and the temperature was in the single digits when I headed out this morning. I have been trying to remember essentials like gloves and jacket. I’m still working up to hat and scarf.

The past couple of weeks have been nice, kind of quiet. Mr. Guff and Artie came to visit the Saturday after Thanksgiving and shared a movie for Mr. Guff’s birthday. We’re hoping to see them again in a little less than a month for some sort of New Year’s gathering.

A gigantor puzzle was started that Saturday on our dining room table. It has since caused various members of our household to cry out in mortal anguish when a piece doesn’t quite fit.

Games are now running Tuesday nights and Wednesday nights at our house. It’s nice to have a house full of people having fun.

This past weekend, everyone stayed in for the most part and played World of Warcraft, anticipating both a new patch this week and the expansion coming out in a little over a month. Who needs holiday shopping when you can just stay home and have fun with your friends?

OK, so we have been out on the town, shopping a little, prowling about for the Wii. PhysOrg wants one. He called around to a bunch of places in town trying to find one on Friday, but had no luck. We made another attempt last night, hitting about four stores on the west side before stopping for ice cream. Still no luck. But Cold Stone has Dark Chocolate Peppermint right now and somehow a large container of it ended up in our freezer. Such a pity …

EDIT: I also survived had my holiday party for work yesterday afternoon. Texas Roadhouse is not the best dining choice for vegetarians, but I guess it’s really comparable to most steakhouses in that respect. The cinnamon butter they serve with their rolls goes wonderfully with a plain baked sweet potato, though.

The eggnog in the liquor bottle is likely to be more potent than the eggnog in the milk carton.
