Even kitties, being the temperamental, willful, spritely free spirits that they are, crave order, comfort, stability, and a consistent schedule.

Some Signs of Spring

Filed under: Uncategorized — lisa @ 9:36 pm

Bulbs are coming up outside.  I caught a few glimpses of them last week and they are very visible now.  We have some tulips and various other plants shoving through the leafy soil mulch near the mailbox and around our deck– I am looking forward to seeing those grow and flower over the coming weeks.  Perfectly edible (delicious!) onion chives are popping up where we found them last year, by the steps on the back deck.  I suspect there will be enough lily of the valley in the backyard to put Alice on the warpath, but I think they’re kind of pretty.

The wild strawberry we started in the front yard last year is also coming back (likely with a vengeance, which is fine by me).  I happened* to pick up a container of green tea with wild strawberry and rhubarb this weekend, perfectly reminiscent of Spring in Wisconsin (lacks asparagus, but I don’t think asparagus would make a very good flavor for tea).

We have our first-ever Breakfast Marathon** planned for this weekend and it just happens* to be the day of the first outdoor Farmer’s Market on the Square.  Since we’re going to be downtown anyway, we might as well see what’s for sale.

It’s not what I would call “warm” yet, but it’s Spring!

* I am starting to have more respect for the unintentional things that happen in life.  My life has been much altered by fortuitous accidents.

** This is not a real race and does not involve any RUNNING.  Instead, there will be a short period of starvation, followed by heaps of gluttony.  Coconut macaroons and breakfast sandwiches with boursin are a must.  Various pastries and tortes will also be acquired, maybe eaten at a slower pace.  By Jove, there will be coffee and freshly-squeezed juice!

Mixing it up in the middle of the week

To ensure that I did not have a lonely week, Matt and Liz came over and watched Hellboy and Blazing Saddles with me on Wednesday night.  Tonight I had yoga, followed by The Last King of Scotland.

After years of intention, I finally picked up a DVD version of My Fair Lady and people have volunteered to watch it with me tomorrow night!  Yay!

And there are plans for Saturday (shopping, yoga workshop, bellydancing!).  Oh, how time does fly when one’s fiance is away …

Dreary Day

I really appreciate that it’s not snowing, but it has been rainy, cool, and dreary today. I drove from the parking garage at work to the garage at home, ignoring my list of errands since none of them were really dire.

I hope Michael had more luck with the weather as he headed east this morning to visit his friends Michael and Heather, who live near Washington, D.C. He saw to it that the garage door was repaired and MythTV was set up before he left on his week-long trip.

We had a nice dinner with Michael’s family at the Mariner’s Inn last night to celebrate his mom’s birthday. She would have been 56. I was thinking about being at her birthday dinner the year before, at the same restaurant. I remember Margot sharing her dessert with all of us, although we were bursting at the seams from dinner. This year Althea made a delicious tres leches cake with blackberry sauce for her mother and we had it at the restaurant.

My plan for tonight is to curl up with a blanket and kitties, probably have leftover pizza for dinner, and watch Scrubs re-runs, then possibly a movie … something comforting that I haven’t seen in a while like Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, or Amelie.

Dragotea din Tei

(or “Numa Numa”) is actually by the (former) band O-Zone which hails from Moldova, part of Eastern Europe under Soviet control until 1990. The original language of the song is Romanian/Moldovan. This finally solves a small mystery for me– I am not familiar with Romanian in the least, but I kept thinking that the song sounded not quite Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, but similar. Hey, I can identify a Romance language when I hear it!  Go go Liberal Arts education!

I have been listening to their album DiscO-zone for a year or so now without knowing anything about the band. Thanks, Wiki.
