The deal you get may also depend on the type of car you are buying. Used Hondas happen to retain much of their value. If there was a bigger difference between new and used prices, the discount I received by buying last-year’s model might not have made up for it.

Thanks, I am very OK– minimal muscle soreness for a couple of days and no injuries. It really doesn’t take much damage for a thirteen year old car to be considered a “total loss.” I’m bummed about it. In the meantime, I can still drive it, which makes the probable search for a replacement less critical at the moment.

Hi Lisa,

On a much more modest scale, Bryan and I have been putting aside $1,000 per year in an “acorn fund” at the Madison Community Foundation. After 10 years of doing this (I think that’ll be 2014), we’ll have a $10,000 endowment at the Community Foundation. From then into perpetuity, our family will be able to make annual donations of (I think) $500 to charity. I love the idea of having a permanent giving vehicle. I also love the idea of our kids growing up with the sense that even people of modest means can create a substantial charitable endowment.
