Gaming

You Win!

Most Monday nights I get together with Matt, Josh, and Joe online and we play some game or other. When all of us are available we tend to play AI War: Fleet Command, a strategy game in space. It’s a fairly complex game and full games tend to take upwards of 20 hours to complete. I think I’ve won about 4 games during the two and a half-years I’ve been playing.  The following screenshot took us about half a year to achieve.

22 weeks to get here

But wait, there’s more…

An email sent to my Friday gaming group this week

Are you aware of the many and varied benefits of pie?  Longevity, increased happiness and sexual potency, halitosis prevention, and beneficial mutations are just a few of the perks that pie has brought us.  For trillions of year, pie has been the leading the way in food technology and innovation.  From the pugilistic fighting pies of yesteryear, to today’s GigaFlav™ portable micro-pies with over 120 megafillings.  Pies have impacted every part of our lives and society.  Did you know, for example, that a lemon custard pie once served in the United State senate, and helped pass the bill to abolish dinosaurs?  Did you also know that the deep sea blueberry crumbler pie is the reason why English trade with the orient was possible during the middle ages?  Yes, the rich history of pies can be found in anywhere you look, and you can help celebrate today by selecting your favorite pie from the local Crust-Station and Filing Enrichment Center

Please help us honor the history and tradition of the majestic pie by selecting one of these little bastards to devour alive.

Time is limited, so act now!

Dragon Age II

Dragon Age II

So, Dragon Age II (DAII) is coming out tomorrow, March 8.  Thanks to Steam, it’s pre-loaded onto my computer to be unlocked the moment it’s available.  This is the sequel (of course) to Dragon Age: Origins and its expansion Dragon Age: Awakenings.  I’ve played through both the original and the expansion (I finished the expansion a couple of weeks ago), and I am very excited about the sequel.  I’m also excited for the sequel because I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 so much.  Bioware has been an amazing company for producing engaging and exciting roleplaying games, and DAII seem to be no different.  I’ve heard a lot of people who are unhappy about how DAII has been, excuse the term, “Mass Effected”.  Let me explain that.

Christmas present idea!

If you were wondering what to get me for Christmas, literally everyone I know could get me one of these and it wouldn’t be enough.

The 7th Guest

Old man Stauf built a house
and filled it with his toys
six guests were invited one night
their screams the only noise.
Blood inside the library,
blood right up the hall,
dripping down the attic steps,
hey guests, try not to fall.
No one came out that night,
not one was ever seen.
But old man Stauf is waiting there
crazy,
sick,
AND MEAN!

Xaxxon loves it!

4.5e D&D :-(

Today I became aware of Dungeons and Dragons Essentials, an update to 4th Edition.

Here is a really good post.  I’ve read a lot about it today, but most of it is second hand information.  Sadly, I’m not happy with what I’ve read so far.  I’ll post more when we have definite information.

It’s Christmas in July

July has been a good month for me.  I got my new iPhone, the iPhone 4 (which has been rocking my socks off), Audible finally released an iPhone app, and Valve released a free game, which is an almost identical remake of a game I really enjoyed about 5 years ago, Alien Swarm.

To start, I’m very happy with my recent iPhone 4 upgrade.  The iPhone 4 is so much faster than my old 3G, and the battery life is much improved.  Facetime is a really cool feature, but until it stops being WiFi only, it will not be something that get’s a ton of use.  The biggest difference is the screen quality.  The new high density display is really something else and I notice it every time I use it.  All-in-all a worthwhile upgrade.

I was very happy to discover that Audible has released an iPhone application.  This made me happy because I was quite jealous of their android app which as been in beta for a while now.  I downloaded it yesterday and started playing around with it when I ran into some issues.  First off Audible appears to be having a problem with their download service, so I cannot currently download any of my books.  This is something of a bummer as quite a few people are having their first experience with audible through this app (coming from the App Store).  I’m sure Audible will resolve the issue, but they’ve probably lost a bunch of business because of it.  So I can’t use it yet to download books, oh well, we’ll get around to that when it’s fixed.  The other annoyance that I have is that I cannot access Audible’s website/store from the app.  This is the same issue the Kindle has, and it’s not their fault, it’s Apples.   Apple takes a cut of everything sold through apps on the iPhone, so Amazon can’t sell books (audio or text) from their iPhone apps.  Bah.  I would like to be able to browse their selection and purchase audio books without having to go to their website.

And last, but most definitely not least, Valve software release an updated port of a game called Alien Swarm this week.  I think it was around 2005 when a company called Black Cat games put out a UT2k4 mod called Alien Swarm.  We played a bunch of Unreal Tournament back then, and I don’t recall where I found this, but it was pretty intriguing so I picked it up.  It was an absolute blast.  I remember playing an awful lot of it and I’m not really sure why we stopped, although I remember getting to some absolutely death dealing areas and having trouble getting past.  So it may have been that we hit a wall.  The game has 4 classes, so you get to pick your play style.  The original game was top down, the new version is also top down, but at a slight angle so the view is nicer.  It’s 4 player co-op and it’s a total blast to shoot through.  Valve went ahead and set the price point at zero, ensuring that anyone who has ever played a Valve game would pick this up and get addicted.  I can only assume that this is the the first taste and that we’re going to have to pay for the second one.  That’s fine by me, I would have paid for this one.  I got to kick around with Matt last night for a while, and I’m really looking forward to having 4 players to stomp on these maps with.

I may cry

Steam has been released for the Mac.  A number of games on my steam account already have Mac ports.

The second step is Linux:

So… beautiful… should have sent… a poet.

Everyone, its time to celebrate.

Game planning

I’m currently planning 2 (technically 3) games. And it’s great. I just need some more downtime so that I can actually have time to write. I have agreed to run a one-shot in June and I’m running a Friday night game going forward. I haven’t had a good chance to sit down and write and be creative in a while, and it isn’t easy to do that. I should schedule some writing sessions for myself so that I actually have time set aside for that.

Curse you Valve!

Another Valve mention.  I am currently re-installing, half-life, opposing forces, blue-shift, half-life2, half-life2: episode1, and half-life2: episode 2.  Why?  Because all of this talk about valve recently has gotten me thinking about the incredibly badass story that Valve has created and I want to experience it again and remember it.

Valve

Valve Software has blown my mind this week.  I’m gonna post about it more later, but I just wanted to say, “Holy cow”.

Turn Based Strategy

Recently I have had some opportunities to play some Turn Based Strategy games again.  Not board games, although, those count.  Most TBS games aren’t actually turned based these days, but more of a RTS with decidedly turn like rules, and the ability to pause (making “turns” last as long as you need).

Recently, I’ve been playing a lot of Heroes of Might and Magic III and AI War.  HoMMIII is a true turn-based game, and one that I have been playing for over 10 years.  You think I would be better at it having played it for so many years.  It’s a great game, and playing multiplayer hotseat has been a staple activity for me and my friends this last decade.  You can pick up a copy at GoG.com.  Recently we have discovered a new game called AI War.  It’s a coop RTS with TBS-style play.  The game supports up to 8-players, who play against a hostile AI.  It’s filled a nice niche in our multiplayer gaming.  It’s also a good example of how games do not need sumer amazing 3d ultra graphics to be good games, you just need solid gameplay.

More companies need to take a look at these games and figure how to adapt and improve.

WoW 3.3

I haven’t posted about (much) Warcraft lately.  I’m still actively playing, and the game recently received a pretty big patch, 3.3: The Fall of the Lich King.  This patch added a new tier dungeon, and a bunch of changes for casual players, primarily the new dungeon finder tool.  So far I’m quite happy with the changes and as a tank I’ve had an absolutely fabulous time with the dungeon finder so far (being a tank means I get into dungeons pretty much instantly).  Lots of other nice changes have improved the experience and I’m quite looking forward to stepping into the new raid.

Well.. that was fun.

The summer is by no means over, but I have gotten past the two biggest weekends unscathed (and I had a lot of fun).  I got to see lots of family and friends and spend some quality time with everyone.  I hope everyone else had a good time and I hope that I’ll get to see everyone there next year (and maybe a few more).

I am definitely feeling some winddown after all that, but I’m also feeling some windup for the upcoming wedding (my own).  More on that as it develops.

One of the things that I’m working on a bit is trying to figure out my gaming schedule for the fall.  It looks like Friday night and Sunday afternoon are going to be  the good days, but there’s still more to come.

Summer in swing

We’ve started down the road of summer activities and I’m already behind.  I need to start scheduling things so that they actually get done.  I tend to follow my schedule well enough, especially if it’s something that needs to get done regularly.  I should read up on RTM and see what kind of habits I can get myself into.

Things on my todo list:

  • I’m going to go ahead and compress all the wedding stuff into a single bullet, but theres a lot to do.
  • Two trips to Jacks, one which still needs a large amount of organization and coordination.
  • Figure out house finance stuff.
  • Clean and organize: room, desk, computers, basement.
  • play World of Warcraft
  • knock out some of the single player games I’ve purchased but haven’t played
  • Budget for next year
  • Plan my Eberron game (possibly for the fall, but maybe further than that).
  • Schedule some RPGA.
  • Go see medical professionals for checkups and physicals and maintenance.

In the meantime, work is going well, and there aren’t too many personal tragedies to deal with (no one I know is threatening suicide or anything over Michael Jackson).  Josh and Betsy will be moving north at the end of the month and so we’ll begin a new era of large amounts of space between us.

So yeah, getting hit with a big bag of life, but I’m enjoying most of it and trying to embrace change and make it work for me.

Eberron Religions

There’s a dragon article about religion in Eberron over at the wizards website. This article doesn’t require a DnDi account, so go read up.

Google Wave

First a couple of links for you:

http://wave.google.com

http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2009/05/google-wave-mashes-communication-collaboration-together.ars

http://lifehacker.com/5272048/google-wave-is-what-email-would-look-like-if-it-were-invented-today

So google has given us a nice multi-month advanced preview of a new technology called “wave”.   It sounds pretty neat and I’m happy to be excited about it.  It seems rather similar to several “groupware” offering that are currently available but most of those require more patience/resources than I have the ability to produce.  I’m a little worried than “wave” will be nothing more than facebook2: the electric boogaloo.  I think that for wave to succeed as a technology long term (to achieve this “email next” they seem to want to claim) it needs to be an open protocol and allow for interoperable servers running on different networks (i.e. decentralized, it cant just be google; yahoo, microsoft and whoever else needs to be able to use this tech), much the way email does right now.  It needs to be scaleable, important functionality needs to be accessable on a multitude of devices e.g. cellphones, and operating systems.  It looks like most of this is in place, I’m excited to see it in action.

In the meantime I have signed up for sandbox access.  I kind of think there might be an opportunity to make a RPG platform on wave, and I’m going to do some serious looking into it.

Hitting 80

It’s been a long time in coming, but I finally hit level 80 with one of my WoW characters, Orgimus. I’ve been having a lot of fun playing WoW again and I’m really looking forward to playing with Lisa more, and Joe, Matt and Alice this Summer. I’m still working on my main character, Teqnacht, but I’m only playing him with Lisa, who has less time to play right now.

It’s good to be enjoying the game this much again.

D&D Campaign Blogs

Thought I would just make a note here that I’ve put up the second of my D&D campaign blogs.  One night in Khorvaire is where I will be posting stuff about the next game I plan on running.  It will be a D&D 4th edition game, and that’s about as specific as I can get right now.  I’m looking forward to Eberron in 4th edition because I think the gameplay has exactly the right feel for the Eberron setting.  The campaign books come out in June and July and I hope to be able to start sometime around there, but we’ll see how things are (getting married in the fall so I might be feeling the crunch).  I probably won’t start posting on that blog until the campaign book comes out, but I’ll try to note it here if I do.

I’m currently running Unbearable Truth on Friday nights.  Links to both games can be found on my blog as long as they are running.
